All-American! Reis takes 5th at 2018 NCAA wrestling championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Closing out his career with an impressive victory on a national stage, University of Mary senior Jared Reis earned fifth place at the 2018 NCAA Division II national championships to earn All-American honors. Reis becomes just the fourth Marauders wrestler to earn NCAA All-American honors and equals UMary's best individual finish at the national tournament.

Undefeated on the opening day of the tournament to ensure he would finish in the top eight in the country and earn All-American honors, Reis took to the mat three times in order to secure fifth place.

The Napoleon, ND, native started Championship Saturday facing the country's #1 ranked wrestler at 157, Cody Law of Pitt.-Johnstown, in the semifinal round. With the opportunity to battle for a championship at stake, Reis fell just short in a 7-5 decision to Law, who is 24-1 on the season.

Reis next lost in the consolation semifinals when he was pinned by Matt Malcom of Nebraska-Kearney in 43 seconds.

Now with fifth place on the line, Reis regained his winning form. In a hard fought bout with Tyler Miles of Newman, Reis claimed a 5-3 decision for the win.

Reis joins Taylor Nagel (2012), Trevor Johnson (2012) and Jesse Laber (2008) as Marauders who have earned NCAA All-American status. Reis also ties Nagel and Laber for the Marauders best finish at an NCAA championship. Both Laber and Reis are natives of Napoleon, ND. He is the 45th UMary wrestler to earn All-American honors, either NCAA or NAIA.

A graduate transfer from NCAA Division I Oregon State University, Reis finishes his season and UMary career with a record of 11-5.

The Marauders earned 10 team points on the strength of Reis' success. The final standings have not yet been determined.
