Upset bid falls short in Marauders road loss to Dragons

Box Score MOORHEAD, MN – The University of Mary women's basketball upset bid fell just short when the visiting Marauders dropped a 67-56 decision to MSU Moorhead. Playing from behind since the opening basket of the game, the Marauders could never catch the Dragons, who is sitting second in the Northern Sun North Division and fourth overall.

Macy Williams knocked down four treys and led the Marauders with 14 points. The freshman was 4-of-9 on 3-pointers and 5-of-11 overall from the field and didn't commit a turnover.

Two other Marauders also reached double figures. Gabbie Bohl scored 13 points and added five rebounds. Cassie Askvig had 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two rebounds.

Lauren Rotunda led the Marauders with eight rebounds. The Fargo, ND, native also had six points and three assists. Senior Dani Williams, the newest member of the Marauders 900 point club, had six points and six rebounds.

Jacky Volkert led the Dragons with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Megan Hintz added 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Down a dozen after the first quarter, closed twice within six points on Macy Williams treys before entering intermission trailing 39-31.

Digging down early in the third, the back-to-back baskets by Bohl and Askvig and a trey by Dani Williams closed the Marauders deficit to 41-38. Soon a 6-0 runs behind two Bohl baskets and an Askvig jumper in the lane pulled UMary within 48-46 late in the third quarter.

Rotunda scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to make the contest a one possession game at 53-50. It would be the last UMary basket for nearly seven minutes. The Dragons outscored the Marauders 12-1 to take a 65-51 lead before Macy Williams hit a layup with 2:52 remaining in the game. UMary went 0-for-8 and committed two turnovers during the MSUM run that sealed the Dragons win.

While neither team shot exceptionally well, the Dragons hit 40.9 percent of their shots to 34.4 percent for the Marauders. UMary was 8-of-24 behind the arc to MSUM's 3-for-16 effort. The Dragons made all ten of their free throw attempts and outrebounded the Marauders 43-39. UMary made half of its free throws.

The Marauders return home to face Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State University on January 12-13.
