HOUGHTON, MI – After sputtering for nearly two games, the University of Mary offense came to life in the Marauders second match on day two of the Keweenaw Classic. The Marauders rolled to an easy win in the first set and knocked off Lake Superior State University 3-1 (25-14, 28-26, 22-25, 25-20).
Lauren Randall crushed her way to 29 kills and
Katelyn Olson and
Morgan Schnabel both reached double figures in terminations.
The Marauders lost the day's opener to Northern Michigan 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-23).
After beginning to click offensively in the final set of the day against Northern Michigan, the Marauders continued to roll against the Lakers. UMary posted 19 kills and hit an amazing .515 in the 25-14 opening set win. Randall had eight kills in the set and Olson added five without any attack errors.
While not as efficient offensively as a team in the second set, Olson and Schnabel came through in the clutch with kills for the final two points of a 28-26 win to move ahead 2-0.
After taking a 25-22 set three loss, the Marauder picked up their first win of the tournament by taking set three 25-20. UMary posted 18 kills to just nine for LSSU. Randall was the go-to person, posting nine kills in the set and rallying the Marauders to the win. Down 17-15, UMary outscored Lake Superior State 10-3 down the stretch with Randall contributing four of the kills. Katja Berg added two kills and an ace for the final point during the Marauders run.
Randall finished the game with 29 kills and her third straight double double with 13 digs. Olson had 15 kills and Schnabel 10.
Amanda Lopes chipped in five aces, 58 assists and 12 digs while assisting on two blocks.
Jody Heidel had a career-high 19 digs,
Geovana Almeida 15 and Berge 13.
UMary fell behind earlier in the opening game of the day against Northern Michigan. Continuing their offensive drought from the night before against tournament host Michigan Tech, the Marauders posted 14 points in the first set and 11 in the second.
The Marauders offense began to fire on all cylinders in the third set against the Wildcats. After combining for 14 kills in the first two sets, UMary exploded for 16 in the third. Behind a 5-0 run featuring a pair of kills by
Katelyn Olson, the Marauders snared a late 21-19 lead. Eventually up 23-21, the Marauders couldn't extend the match as the Wildcats rattled off four straight points to sin the set 25-23.
Randall picked up her second straight double double, registering a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs.
Morgan Schnabel added nine kills. Both Randall and Schnabel had six kills in the third set.
Jody Heidel registered a team-high 12 digs and two aces.
Amanda Lopes dished 24 assists.
NMU, which hit .323 for the game to .080 for UMary and held a 14-1 edge in blocks, was led by Leticia Antunes with 12 kills and ten digs. Madison Whitehead added 11 kills.
The Marauders (4-4) finish their Keweenaw Classic appearance against the University of Wisconsin Parkside on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 8 am CST.
