Offense struggles in Marauders loss to Mavericks

MANKATO, MN – Looking to win their second straight Northern Sun volleyball match on the road, the University of Mary instead was swept in three sets by Minnesota State University (25-12, 25-10, 25-23).

The Marauders struggled to find an offensive rhythm, hitting .022 for the match. The Mavericks clicked from the start, posting a .311 hitting percentage for the night.

Freshman Morgan Schnabel led the Marauders with six kills. Katelyn Olson added five kills and a team-high 12 assists. Lauren Randall, the NSIC leader in kills at nearly five per set, was limited to a season-low three kills for the match.

Geovana Almeida had 12 digs for UMary.

Sydney Powell led the Mavericks with 11 kills and four aces.

UMary (5-8 overall / 1-3 NSIC) had no answer for MSU (7-5 / 1-3) in the opening set. The Mavericks hit .440 with 13 kills and just two attack errors. The Marauders checked in with seven kills and seven errors. UMary took a step back in the second set, making nine attack errors and recording five kills.

Despite the slow start, the Marauders came out of intermission on the attack. UMary moved to a 14-10 lead when a Sydney Murphy ace and an Olson kill capped a 4-0 run and force MSU to call a time out. The tight match continues with Almeida serving an ace to knot the score at 22-22 and Natalia Cruz following with a kill two points later to even the game 23-23. UMary's hopes to extended the match were extinguished on back-to-back kills by Powell.

UMary finishes its south central Minnesota swing with a visit to Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, Sept. 23, the nation's second-ranked squad.
