PITTSBURG, Kansas – One successful effort is all it took for
Davina Carr to repeat as an All-American. Taking a strategic approach, the University of Mary junior claimed third in the pole vault at the NCAA Division II women's national indoor track & field championships.
The Nine Mile Falls, Washington, native passed on all of the first three heights, the only one out of the 17 competitors to take this tact. In her first effort of the day, Carr sailed over the bar at 12' 10" (3.91 meters), one of just seven to make that height. It would be her only make of the day, and the only one she needed.
The next height ended the day for all but two competitors. Carr took three shots at 13' 1.75" but couldn't clear the bar.
While four athletes finished their day at 3.91 meters, Carr earned third by being the last of that group to miss. Jamie Roberts of Grand Valley State University claimed the championship with a mark of 13.5.75".
Carr improved two slots over the 2015 indoors when she placed fifth. She took third at the Northern Sun championships two weeks ago and was seeded fourth entering the national championships. Her effort earned the Marauders six team points on the day.
Despite posting a personal record in the 60 meter hurdles,
Tonie-Ann Pandohie was unable to advance to the finals. The sophomore All-American from Kingston, Jamaica, cleared the barriers in 8.55 seconds to place third in her preliminary qualifying heat but needed to beat a time of 8.505 seconds to move forward.
Still waiting to compete for the Marauders is
Alexis Zeis. The four-time All-American will race in the 3,000 meter run. It is the next to last event at the meet and is scheduled to start at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Saturday. Zeis is the eighth seed in the event.
The championships are being held in the Robert W. Plaster Center on Pittsburg State University's campus.
