SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The formula has proven simple for the University of Mary women's track & field team: dominate day two of the Northern Sun outdoor championships and win another title. For the fourth straight year the Marauders have dominated the scoring on the final day of the NSIC women's outdoor track & field championships and for the fourth straight year the Marauders will take home the championship hardware.
The Marauders earned 162 points to breeze past Augustana by 53 points to capture Mary's fourth straight title and seventh in nine years. Augie scored 109 points to finish second and Winona State University claimed third with 97 points in the 14-team meet.
How dominant were the Marauders on Saturday? The 128 points Mary earned just today would have been enough for the title. The Marauders won seven events on Day Two and eight total while setting two meet records.
Kathryn Stewart, the defending NSIC Women's Track Athlete of the Year, was dominant in all four of her events. The seven-time All-American captured the 100 and 200 meter dashes and ran legs on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams.
The Marauders opened the day with a blazing start in the 4x100 meter relay. Close after the first three legs on the efforts of
Tonie Pandohie,
Faith Kjelstrup and
Cassandra Jones, Stewart pulled away down the stretch as Mary posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 46.64 seconds.
Stewart then ran away with her two individual events, winning the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.62 seconds before taking the 200 with a provisional qualifying time of 24.10 seconds. This was the third straight time the senior from Kingston, Jamaica, won the 200 at the NSIC championships.
The day concluded with a Mary win in the 4x400 meter relay. Stewart joined with
Josie Guptill, Rodriguez and Jones to set a meet record in a time of 3:44.26.
In addition to her two wins in the relay, Jones finished as a three-time winner for the Marauders. The sophomore from North York, Ontario, won the 400 meter dash in a provisional qualifying time of 55.02 seconds. She just missed the conference record by .03 seconds.
Claiming her second win of the weekend with a record-setting performance,
Danylle Kurywchak captured the triple jump a day after winning the long jump. The junior from Cameron Park, Calif., shattered the NSIC record with a leap of 12.61 meters on her second attempt of the day. The old mark was 12.17 meters. Kurywchak won the triple jump by 10.5" over the runner-up (12.61m to 12.34m).
Kayla Cummings won the Marauders seventh title of the day. The native of Helena, Mont., uncorked a throw of 39.45 meters to capture the event in surprise fashion. In her first meet of the year for Mary, Cummings posted the best mark of the season by a thrower in the NSIC.
A deep performance by the Marauders led the squad to the title.
After earning 16 points for the Marauders through yesterday,
Molly McDonald came up with six more on Saturday. She placed third in the 100 meter hurdles with a provisional qualifying time of 14.27 seconds. Right behind in fifth place was Pandohie in a time of 14.61 seconds.
Pandohie also claimed eighth in the 200 meter dash after registering a time of 25.10.
Freshman
Alexis Zeis placed in two events. She finished third in the 1,500 meter run in a time of 4:32.92, a provisional qualifying mark. The Bismarck, N.D., native then came back to place fifth in the 5,000 meter run with a clocking of 17:32.49.
In the 800 meter run,
Brienna Lynch claimed second. The senior from Bismarck, N.D., posted a time of 2:13.49.
The Marauders dominated the 400 meter dash. In addition to a win by Jones, Rodriguez placed fourth in a time of 56.55 while
Kameya Johnson took sixth in 57.67.
The Marauders also had three placers in the 400 meter hurdles.
Crystal Hovland took third with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:02.29. Guptill ran a 1:02.78 to place fifth and
Julie Dinius was clocked in 1:03.36 to claim eighth.
Kennedy Robbins placed fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, cruising the course in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11.09.85.
In addition to her work in the 4x100, Kjelstrup also placed sixth in the triple jump with an effort of 11.50 meters.
Jasmyn Garcia was right behind in the triple jump when she took eighth on a leap of 11.49 meters.
Katelynn Engh grabbed seventh in the 1,500 meter run by clocking a 4:45.32.
