4x100 Relay Blazes Way to Spot in NCAA Championship Finals

ALLENDALE, Mich. – For the second straight year, the University of Mary 4x100 meter relay team will compete on the final day of the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The success of the relay team offset disappointments for Mary in two individual events on the opening day of nationals.

Needing a top nine finish to advance to the finals, the Marauders 4x100 meter relay team posted a time of 47.18 seconds to place fourth in their heat and eighth overall. The quartet of Tonie Pandohie, Faith Kjelstrup, Cassandra Jones and Kathryn Stewart will now compete for All-American honors and team points on Saturday.

The Marauders 4x100 team that included Jones and Stewart finished fourth in the country in 2014.

Racing less than 50 minutes after helping the relay team advance, Jones fell just short of making the 400 meter finals. The three-time All-American circled the track in 55.66 seconds, placing fifth in her heat and 10th overall in the preliminaries. The sophomore from North York, Ontario, fell two slots and .27 seconds from qualifying.

Davina Carr, an All-American at the 2015 NCAA indoor championships when she placed fifth in the country, was unable to repeat that feat outdoors when she failed to clear the bar.

Following her script from the Northern Sun championships when she placed second, Carr passed on the opening height and started at 3.70 meters. This time, however, the sophomore from Nine Mile Falls, Wash., missed on all three of her attempts and was eliminated.

The Marauders compete in four more preliminary events on Friday. Individually, Stewart runs in the 200 meter dash, Brienna Lynch the 800 meter run and Molly McDonald in the 100 meter hurdles. The Mary 4x400 meter team of Josie Guptill, Melanie Rodriguez, Jones and Stewart close out the second day of the championships.

Also remaining to compete for the Marauders is Danylle Kurywchak, who has to wait until Saturday.
