This Week: The University of Mary Women's Basketball team has proven difficult to defeat at home, but has struggled a bit on the road. The Marauders will head back out on the road for games against Winona State University and Upper Iowa University. U-Mary will take on the Warriors on Friday, January 16, and then face the Peacocks on Saturday, January 17.
The Magic Number: With only 39 points to go,
Brittney Dietz is nearing a milestone that only 14 players in Marauders history have accomplished. She currently sits at 961 points for her career after last week, putting her 17th on the all-time list and if she can maintain her average then she should crack 1000 points against Upper Iowa.
The Records: U-Mary (7-9, 5-5 NSIC) split two home matches in the previous week, first defeating Minnesota State University Moorhead 69-64 but falling to #6 Northern State University 73-56. Winona State (11-3, 7-3 NSIC) defeated the University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State University, in Winona, Minn., 69-52 and 56-48, respectively. Last Week: The Marauders faced tough tests last week against MSU Moorhead and #6 Northern State. First the Dragons took U-Mary all the way down to the wire as the Marauders built an early lead in the first half, but MSU Moorhead kept it close at the half with a 30-27 score in favor of U-Mary. The Marauders built their lead back up to 42-29 early in the second, but the Dragons fought back and narrowed U-Mary's lead to 59-58 around the three minute mark. The Marauders proved their resiliency, however, and eventually won the match 69-64. Dietz recorded her first double double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds while
Sloan Turner provided the help on the interior with nine rebounds and three blocks. The next night turned out to be even more difficult for the Marauders as they took on #6 Northern State. The Wolves opened up the game witha 15-0 run but the Marauders utilized
Haley Hibbs and
Dani Clarke from the perimeter to keep the score close. The Wolves held on to a 31-27 lead at the break with all of U-Mary's points coming from three-point land. Unfortunately the Marauders offense stalled in the second half and the Wolves went on to win 73-56.
History: The Marauders are evenly split with Winona in 14 matches as U-Mary has won the last five meetings between the teams to bring the record back to 7-7. The Marauders hold a decisive 11-2 record over the Peacocks that includes a 4-2 record in Fayette, Iowa.
Next week: U-Mary will return home next week for their annual Alumni Weekend games. They'll host St. Cloud State University on Friday, January 23, before taking on the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, January 24.
