Bismarck, ND - University of Mary all-conference performer
Damon Smith has signed a professional basketball contract with SISU in Copenhagen, Denmark. SISU plays in the Danish Basketball League.
"It`s very exciting,” said Smith in an interview with Scott Westerberg of KFYR-TV. “I`m very outgoing, so I`ll adapt. It`s not intimidating. The only thing that would be intimidating, I`d say, is the first week over there; just to get to know the language and see how things are going, that kind of stuff."
Smith's first professional game is set for September 15. The league's regular season runs into March.
One of the most dynamic and improved players this past season in the Northern Sun, the 6-7 forward earned 2011-12 All-NSIC second team honors. The Marauders senior was a force on both ends of the court and ranked among the league leaders in multiple categories.
Smith was the lone player in the Northern Sun in the top eight in points, rebounds, shooting percentage and blocks. The Milwaukee, WI, native averaged 16.5 points and 6.6 rebounds while making 57.8 per cent of his shots from the field. He is fourth in in the NSIC shooting, seventh in scoring and eighth in rebounding.
A top notch defender, Smith led all NSIC players in blocked shots with 2.08 rejections per game. He led the Marauders in scoring 13 times, reached double figures 15 times and posted three double doubles.
As a junior for the Marauders in 2010-11, Smith averaged 6.7 points and 4.0 rebounds after transferring to U-Mary from Ellsworth Community College while helping the Marauders to their first NCAA tournament appearance.
Smith becomes the second player from the 2010-11 Marauders squad to sign a professional contract. Anthony Moody was drafted and played for the Sioux Falls (SD) Sky Force in the NBA D-League. He finished last season in Europe with the MIA Academy Tbilisi team in the Georgia Super-league.
