Marauders Run Away with Another NSIC Women's Outdoor Title

FINAL RESULTS

Bismarck, ND – Hosting the conference championship for the first time, the University of Mary women's track and field team showed little in the way of hospitality as the Marauders dominated the 2012 Northern Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Marauders won their fourth NSIC title in six years by 84.5 points over Winona State University.

The 10th-ranked Marauders rolled up 200.5 points while the Warriors compiled 116. Augustana closed with 95 points and Wayne State College had 94 to place fourth.

The outdoor win for U-Mary follows up a dominating win at the NSIC indoor championships earlier this spring.

U-Mary captured eight individual titles over two days, including five on Saturday. Melissa Agnew highlighted the show by claiming two titles in record-setting times on the final day. Melissa Walker was also a double winner, taking the triple jump today after winning the long jump on Friday.

In the span of an hour, Agnew captured the 1500 meter run in a blazing time of 4:22.40 to establish a new NSIC mark. It also eclipses the NCAA automatic qualifying standards in the event. The junior All-American followed up 50 minutes later with a time of 2:08.99 in the 800 meter run, setting another NSIC record.

Kristyn Nelson also set a conference record for the Marauders, clearing the 100 meter hurdles in 13.92 to take the title and break the mark she set Friday during the preliminaries.

The Marauders dominated the 100 meter hurdles as Janet Johnson and Walker claimed second and third behind Nelson.

Headlined by Walker, the Marauders captured four of the eight placers in the triple jump. The junior All-American from Kingston, Jamaica, sailed 39-01 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA championships. In addition to her win in the long jump and placing third in the 100 meter hurdles, Walker piled up 26 points on the weekend for U-Mary.

Allison Opp claimed third in the triple jump, Tess Johnson was fifth and Vanessa Friestad, who won the javelin on Friday, placed sixth.

Jennifer Agnew also had a stellar day for U-Mary, placing second in two events. She hit a provisional time in the 3000 meter steeplechase at 10:40.48 while Alicia Nehl finished right behind in third. In the 5000 meter run, Agnew took second with a clocking of 17:32.87 and Dakota Wolf, the NSIC Preseason Track Athlete of the Year, was third.

Stewart also claimed runner-up status in two events. She finished second in the 200 meter dash in a time of 24.41 and also came in second in the 400.

U-Mary placed three people in two other events. In addition to Melissa Agnew, Wolf took third and Kayla Carlson sixth in the 800.

In the 400, freshman Rikki Schmidt cruised to a win in a provisional time of 55.79. She just finished ahead of Stewart while another freshman, Kaitlyn Wurnig, placed eighth.

The Marauders doubled up in two other events. Brianna Lynch joined Agnew on the podium in the 800 after taking fifth while Megan Jenkins and Crystal Hovland were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 meter hurdles.

U-Mary closed out the day with a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relays as Stewart, Jenkins, Lynch and Schmidt posted a time of 3:52.12.
