Moorhead, MN – A dramatic comeback featuring pins by the University of Mary in the final two matches of the night allowed the Marauders to stun the MSU Moorhead Dragons 24-19.
Kyle Larson and
Trevor Johnson produced back to back pins and U-Mary overcame a seven point deficit to record the squad's first Northern Sun wrestling win of the season.
In a back and forth match, the Dragons claimed wins at 197, 285 and 125 to push MSUM to a 19-12 lead. The deficit required the Marauders to win two straight matches, including at least one of the wins by more than a decision.
Larson, a freshman from Amery, WI, gave the Marauders the chance to win when he pinned Graelin Garlington with 1:15 remaining in the 133 match. Leading 7-5 entering the third period, Larson earned his fourth win of the season with the win by fall.
Now trailing 19-18, the Marauders found themselves in perfect position to win the match with Johnson, the nation's third-ranked wrestler at 141, taking to the mat. The sophomore proved the perfect closer for the night as Johnson pinned Conner MacGregor just 2:17 into the match. The Bismarck, ND, native improved to 24-5 on the season.
Both the Marauders and the Dragons each claimed five matches. However, U-Mary recorded three pins on the night to one for MSUM.
Collin Engelhardt picked up the Marauders first win of the night with a 3-1 decision over Kerron Williams at 157.
Taylor Nagel, the NSIC Wrestler of the Week, followed with a tight 3-2 decision at 165 over Jacob Bennett.
Following a loss at 174, the Marauders regained the lead in lightning speed at 184 when
Brady Anderson quickly pinned Kody Kalkbrenner just 34 seconds into the match.
The Marauders return to action on February 4 at Southwest Minnesota State.
