No man is more associated with the history and achievements of the University of Mary football program than Myron Schulz, the Marauders highly successful head coach. An assistant coach on the first U-Mary football team in 1988, Schulz has been an integral part of the program’s success since its inception.
U-Mary’s all-time winningest head coach, Schulz enters his 15th season at the Marauders helm in 2013 and will serve his 23rd season on the school’s coaching staff out of the 26 years the program has existed. Since ascending to the top spot in 1999, Schulz has compiled 97 career victories, posted an outstanding .638 winning percentage, and directed the squad to six national tournament appearances and four conference titles. His teams owned a streak of nine straight winning seasons and are 73-37 in conference games.
Prior to the 2008 season, Schulz owned the 16th-best winning percentage among all NCAA active coaches with at least five seasons at four-year colleges. Some of the coaches listed ahead of Schulz were Pete Carroll (USC), Urban Meyer (Florida), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) and John Gagliardi (St. John's). Just behind Schulz was former U-Mary and current Southern Illinois coach Dale Lennon (24th) and Bobby Bowden (Florida State).
Schulz now faces the challenge of creating a dominant program in NCAA Division II. After two seasons making the transition from the NAIA and thus ineligible for conference titles and postseason opportunities, U-Mary finished in a tie for second place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2007, the first year the Marauders were eligible to compete for the NSIC title. In seven NCAA seasons, U-Mary is 34-33 against Northern Sun foes.
Before becoming the Marauders head football coach, Schulz spent seven years as an assistant coach for U-Mary. During that time he was the defensive coordinator for four national playoff teams and three conference champions. His 1995 defense was third in the nation in rushing defense. U-Mary led the NDCAC in scoring defense in 1998.
Prior to beginning his U-Mary coaching career, Schulz was a graduate assistant coach at Montana State University under head coach Earle Solomonson and offensive coordinator Bart Andrus.
“My experiences have given me tremendous insight into the building of a championship football program,” explains Schulz. “I strive to bring continuity to the U-Mary football program. I also work hard to keep the program based on both football and academics.”
Schulz, a Bismarck native, graduated from the University of Mary with bachelor’s degrees in social and behavioral sciences and physical education. He earned a master’s degree in health and human development from Montana State University.
